Training great teachers for Philadelphia’s classrooms

Yesterday we were thrilled to announce a $1.2 million grant to Drexel University to launch a program intended to help address the city’s need for Middle Years (grades 4-8) math and science teachers. Dragons Teach Middle Years (DTMY) will create a new pipeline of dual-certified teachers trained specifically for the challenges of Philadelphia classrooms. You can read more about it in NewsWorks.

The program, designed in partnership with TNTP, the School District of Philadelphia and representatives from charter and Catholic schools, will give participants 30 weeks of student teaching experience–nearly three times the amount required by Pennsylvania law. At scale the program will graduate a cohort of 40 certified teachers annually.

We can’t give every Philadelphia student access to a great school without more great teachers. This program will move us closer to that goal.

Thank you for your continued support of our work.
