In 2012, we invested $350,000 to support Freire High School’s expansion to include a middle school for grades 5-8 serving 500 students. Freire is one of the top-performing college-preparatory schools in Philadelphia.
Freire Charter School was founded in 1998 as a college preparatory high school in Center City Philadelphia drawing students from all over the city. The demanding school curriculum is focused on educating the whole person in order to maximize each student’s college readiness. There are multiple supports provided for students who arrive to the school below grade-level. The school is laser-focused on preparing every student with the academic and life skills necessary to succeed in college and beyond.
Freire Charter School serves students from all across the city at its two campuses in Center City Philadelphia. At the time of the grant, the school’s student population was 90 percent minority and 88 percent economically disadvantaged. Its center city location allows students to explore the vast array of cultural offerings while also engaging in significant community service.
Since opening in 1998, Freire Charter School has built one of the most respected and high-performing academic programs in Philadelphia, highly focused on supporting students to and through college. For example, 75 percent of students in the class of 2012 enrolled in college in the fall immediately after graduation. Of those students, 92 percent persisted to their sophomore year.
