The Philadelphia School Partnership was created to accelerate the pace of education reform in Philadelphia by increasing the number of great school options available to children in our city. We raise philanthropic funds and invest those funds in school operators and people that have the ability to create and maintain great schools across Philadelphia. We also activate parents to demand great schools in their communities and facilitate the sharing of best practices among school leaders.
The Philadelphia School Partnership recognizes that there is much work to be done to ensure that every child in Philadelphia is provided an opportunity to achieve his or her dreams and graduate from high school with the tools needed to compete in the 21st century. Like many cities across the United States, Philadelphia is struggling to provide all of its children with a quality education. As an example of the challenges we face, consider that only 10 percent of 4th grade and 15 percent of 8th grade Philadelphia public school students performed at grade level in 2009, ranking our city near the bottom of 18 major cities participating in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). Philadelphia’s children also perform poorly in comparison to their peers across the state. Only 54 percent and 57 percent of students served by the School District of Philadelphia and charter schools, respectively, read and perform math at grade level. This is compared to the percentage of students statewide proficient or advanced in reading (72%) and math (76%).
The Philadelphia School Partnership understands that changing the education landscape is a challenge that all corners of our city must take on together. That’s why we work with government officials, business leaders, education leaders and practitioners, and communities to pursue our goals. Underlying our vision, mission and work is a deep belief that every child, no matter his or her background, deserves the opportunity to attend a great school and, if offered that opportunity, has the potential to achieve at the highest levels. The Philadelphia School Partnership will pursue this goal until every child in our city has the option to attend a great school and graduate from high school with the skills and knowledge required to succeed in college or the workforce.
